Bike Touring in Southern Finland

Tips for those planning a cycle tour

Southern Finland features a mix of paved bikes paths, quiet paved country roads and gravel roads. You will ride through beautiful landscapes and small villages. You will pass lakes and rivers, on the coastal routes sea pops up every here and there.  We have collected some tips to help you to plan your trip:

1) Timing

Cycling season starts in May and ends in October. We do have continental climate, which means it can be hot in July-beginning of August but most often we have so called Finnish summer weather, which means you will experience many weather types during one week, even within one day.  After a rain shower, we have sun shine again. Summer temperatures typically are from 15 to 25 degrees celcius but at the beginning and in the end of the season especially nights get colder.

2) Route

We have 3 main types of routes: from village-to-village, lakeland and western archipelago

Village-to-village routes are best in early and late seasons as the routes are planned so that there is great cycling infrastucture and services are open also outside the peak season. All these tours start from Helsinki. We have tours mixing self-guided and guided day tours, which make the tours well suitable for single cyclists as well as groups.  In case a transfer is needed, we use local trains where you can take a bicycle with you without any extra cost.

Lakeland routes offer most variable profiles. There are hills, bridges across waters, small villages and public beaches. In the peak season there are a lot of summer cafeterias and all kinds of events from arts to music and handicrafts. On many routes, you will need to take a cycle ferry, which only works once or twice a day and in early/late season only at weekends if even that, so you do have plan in advance and follow  a time schedule.   Best starting places for the lakeland trips are Lappeenranta or Puumala with great rental shops.

Western archipelago route takes you from island to island. You  will need to take ferries. The roads go in the middle of the islands and can be crowded in the peak season in July. Our route takes you to the islands of Seili, Nauvo, Korppoo, Kökar and main island of Åland. The route can also be planned so that you start your trip from Finland and end it in Sweden.

Each route will be adapted to your cycling preferences. In average, e-bikers take 60-80km/day and manual bikers 30-50km/day.  A helmet is always included in the bicycle rental.  Duration of most cycle tours vary from 3 to 8 nights.

3) Luggage

We do not prefer to arrange luggage transfers for ecological reasons. Instead our guests are provided with 2-sided panniers. Luggage stays at the starting point.

4)  Accommodation

Most  guests  make roundtrips with multiple stops but it is well possible to also to choose one accommodation and make day trips from there.

Location is the accommodation selection criteria number one but all accommodations used by us , must be at least 3-star level. We try to select the most authentic, little b&b's or manor hotels with local hosts and access to sauna after a cycling day.

You are mostly welcome!
