Day Tour from Rovaniemi to the frozen waterfalls of Korouoma, 7 hours

7 hours

Moderate

A drive southeast from Rovaniemi in order to hike down to the canyon of Korouoma to see the frozen waterfalls.

Korouoma is a 30km long and up to 130 meters deep canyon fracture valley located 110 kilometers south-east of Rovaniemi. It offers breathtaking scenery all year around, with its cliffs, rapids and waterfalls. This natural reserve is also home of rare species, and a great nature area for hikers. In the Winter time, the waterfalls turn into fantastic ice formations which are well-known for ice-climbing and a great attractions for tourists coming from all around the world.

Your guide will come to pick you up from your accommodation in Rovaniemi and will drive you to Korouoma Canyon for a nice hike in the park. You will have the chance to observe some of the most spectacular frozen waterfalls in Europe and enjoy the beauty of the snowy nature. As you hike across the canyon, your guide will keep an eye on wildlife and flora, and will teach you more about nature and your surroundings. With a bit of luck, you may even spot tracks made by wolves, lynx, wolverines, moose, reindeer, weasles, Arctic hare...

Refreshments and a typical Finnish barbecue snack will be served around the open-fire to keep you warm. This is a great opportunity for your guide to show you how to build a fire as only the natives can. No need for matches or lighter, your guide will use a flint&steel and natural materials you can find in the nature that surrounds you (this can be done in conditions as cold as -30C !). Lunch time is also a great moment for your guide to share their passion and knowledge and answer all your questions about nature, Lapland and life in the Arctic.

Please note that snowshoes are optional. You may easily hike in the canyon with normal winter shoes as there is a beaten path that you can follow. Snowshoes are useful if you need more confidence when hiking down the canyon or just want to enjoy some deep snow walks!

The excursion lasts around 7 hours, including transportation, hiking and the convivial time around the fire. You will be back to Rovaniemi around 16.00.

In all our activities, our groups are limited to 8 people maximum. It it very important for us to provide you with the best experience as possible, and avoid mass tourism. This way, your guide will know you better and will be able to address all your needs and answer your questions. As we usually say : the smaller the group, the bigger the experience !
