Northern Lights Break August-September in Lapland

5 days

Moderate

Active outdoor life in the northernmost Lapland in fall northern lights season.

Inari is the centre of Sámi culture in Lapland. This is, where the Sámi parliament Sajos and the Sámi museum Siida are located. Lake Inari is the third biggest lake in Finland, also called as the "sea of Lapland".

Upon arrival, we'll take you on a relaxing, guided berry picking trip. You get fresh air and can relax and enjoy our wild and clean nature. Our guide tells you about the berries which we collect and taste. A break by campfire with snacks is included.

Next day you will visit the Sámi parliament and the museum and have a cruise by electric catamaran to the holy island, which got its name after the Sámi god Ukko. In the evening, there will be an Aurora campfire.

Tankavaara is the gate to the gold mining district of Lapland. Here you can learn a lot about gold panning all over the world and stay in a cozy new hotel next to the UKK National park.

On the next morning, you will make a self-guided canoe trip. You get picked up from your hotel and driven to Tankapirtti. You will get instructions, canoes, and equipment (lifevests, paddles, bailer, some robe, and waterproof barrels for your own gear) and you are ready to go. The tour ends at the Sámi village of Purnumukka. We drive you and the gear to the starting point and pick up after 4,5 hours from the finishing point. This river is easy to paddle and there are no rapids, beginners as well as families can manage this river easily

Alternatively, you can choose to have a Sámi workshop at the Sámi Cultural Gallery Magga-Hetta. Tuula-Maija Magga-Hetta is a Sámi artist, who has collected Sámi art, textiles,  and everyday utilities to the old Lappish house of her parents in Vuotso village. She can tell you using drums and singing about the beliefs of the indigenous Sámi people.

On the last day, you will take a guided hike two and half kilometers up to the top of Pyhä-Nattanen to see its tor-like forms which consist of granitic bedrock lie at the top of the Pyhä-Nattanen Fell south of Saariselkä Resort in the Sompio Nature Reserve. They are more than five meters high and look like the work of an artist, although they were sculpted by nature. These tors probably consist of the most durable parts of the granitic rock, where the weathering has been slower than in the surrounding rock.

Before leaving home it is good to get fresh air and make a day tour outdoors by a canoe. Canoeing trip starts from Saariselkä, where our guide will meet you. From there it’s a short 45-minute drive to the lake Luttojärvi. Our guide will show and teach you all the necessary information about canoeing and safety.

After the trip, you will get to a sauna with an opportunity to swim. After sauna, you can have an á la carte dinner in the restaurant.
