On this rail holiday, you have a chance to experience the landscapes of Finland on two beautiful railways. One of the railways has been nominated as the most beautiful train journey in Finland among the Finns. The other one has been selected as one of the most beautiful railways in Europe. Now it's your time to enjoy both of these railways and to choose your favorite. During your tour through Finland, you'll see the variety of the Finnish landscape with lakes, forests, fields, and much more!

Your railway holiday starts from the capital of Finland, Helsinki. To discover Helsinki you can take a short break as an extra here (more info in the "extras"). You will take a comfortable train towards Savonlinna. On the train, there is a restaurant car where you can get some food, or even order it to your seat. On your way to Savonlinna you stop to change train at Parikkala which is the starting place for the most beautiful railway in Finland, according to the Finns. On this one-hour train ride, you'll understand the name "land of the thousand lakes" which Finland is often called (even though there are about 188 000 lakes in Finland). On your arrival to the historical town of Savonlinna make sure you're awake as you will pass the Olavinlinna castle by train. After arrival, you head to your hotel and enjoy the afternoon discovering the town. Your room has an excellent view over Lake Saimaa, the biggest lake in Finland.

The next day is to explore the town of Savonlinna. Head first to the medieval Olavinlinna Castle to learn more about the local history. After your visit, you'll have a food workshop and prepare local salty and sweet vegetarian pastries called "lörtsy" with a local expert Sanna. The afternoon is yours for the taking. You might want to head to the Savonlinna market and try some delicious local vendace or just roam around the town before getting back to your hotel. In the evening, you can have dinner as you wish, but you can also add as extra a boat trip with a local photographer to observe Saimaa ringed seals.

On your third day, you'll head by bus towards the city of Kuopio.  You can spend the afternoon as you wish exploring this beautiful little town. You can visit the Finnish sauna and go swimming at Kuopion Saana or you can walk up to Puijo observation tower to take a look at the wonderful lake view. Both options can include dinner or you can have dinner at your hotel later in the evening.

Next morning, you will take a food walk with a local guide. You will visit the famous market hall of Kuopio as well as the market. You will try some local delicacies and have lunch as you wish. Later you might want to wander around the city to find the Cathedral of Kuopio or maybe have an ice cream at the old port. After midday, you just hop on a train at the Kuopio train station which is located right besides your hotel. The railway to Oulu has been selected as one of the best rural train journeys in Europe by The Guardian. On this train ride you'll see the fields joining the lakes as well as the traditional wooden houses on the country side. Remember to keep an eye on the wooden station buildings on your way - especially in Kajaani. Your arrival to Oulu is the end for your tour but not for your holiday. Take a look at our extras and extend your trip, tailormade even all the way to Lapland.
