Winter Break in Saariselkä with arrival in Rovaniemi

5 days

Easy

Family winter adventure including a snowshoeing trip, a snowmobiling safari to a reindeer farm and a sledge-dog safari.

Apukka is a holiday resort about 10 minutes north from the Rovaniemi airport by the road leading north. Arrival in Rovaniemi makes it possible to visit Santa's Village as well. You will stay in an aurora cabin big enough for 2 adults and 2 children in extra beds. The aurora cabin has a glass roof so in case you are lucky and the northern lights will dance on sky, you can see them right from your bed.

Saariselkä is the most northern skiing resort in Finland. It is a ski village known as a cross-country skiing paradise but there are also 15 slopes and a lot of other activities, for example the longest toboggan slide in the country (=over 1 km). Part of Saariselkä is located in the Urho-Kekkonen National Park. The most famous Arctic hills are called Kaunispää, which is next to the village and Kiilopää, which is 17km away from the village. Urho Kekkonen National Park (=UKK-park) established in 1983 and covering 2 550 square kilometres, it is one of Finland's largest protected areas. It is named after the former president Urho Kaleva Kekkonen.

Log cabin in Kakslauttanen area in Saariselkä is owned and hosted by a private family. There are only 3 log apartments with 1 bedroom and a loft and 2 log cabins with 2 separate bedrooms in total available. The host family takes care of part of the activities themselves.

Activities:

1) Snowshoeing is an easy sport which keeps you warm. Snowshoes enable you to enter the snowy forest and enjoy Lappish nature. Keep your eyes open – we might meet reindeer or rabbit in the forest. After the hike, you will relax by the campfire, enjoy hot juice and fry a sausage by the flames.

2) Snowmobiling to a reindeer farm takes you through the wide-open scenery dominated by the arctic hills to a reindeer farm where you can feed reindeer. A tasty lunch will be served in a wooden hut "kota" before the safari continues back to Saariselkä ski village

3) Tobogganing in the winter park of Saariselkä is a must! This is the longest toboggan slope in Finland (1,8km) offering a lot of fun and adrenaline, also to adults. The ski pass is valid for 2 hours allowing you to get up after which you can still try snow tubes or skate if you like. if you rather go downhill skiing, it is possible to upgrade the ticket even on-site.

4) Husky safari is the favourite activity of children. Nothing beats the feeling of gliding through the forest in a sleigh pulled by a team of huskies. A 4-hour safari with soup lunch is included in your package.
